As an employer, it is crucial to be updated on emerging labour laws and labour relations to ensure the smooth operation of business.  Labour laws clarify the business’s obligation to its employees, ensuring they are empowered and protected. Instinctively, a hierarchy is present between an employer and an employee, to avoid imbalance or misuse of power, labour laws align this issue. Employer-employee relations are monitored and guided through these laws and policies ensuring accountability of both parties in various circumstances.

The Federation of Kenya Employers (FKE) has mounted a training to build the capacity of employers to navigate emerging issues in labour laws and labour relations. The training is offered in two phases, it begun with a six-hour virtual masterclass and the next phase includes a physical workshop, coming this August.

Ms. Jacqueline Mugo, FKE Executive Director & CEO, while opening the virtual masterclass,  she highlighted that recently,  labour laws have evolved including changes in:

  • NHIF Act
  • Data Protection Act
  • Employment Act

The virtual masterclass  covered three modules and was facilitated by Shem Otanga, a Legal Practitioner and Data Protection Expert at CDH Legal. George Masese, Head of Industrial Relations, Legal and Membership Services, FKE, Dickens Ouma, Senior Legal Officer, FKE, Eric Munyobi, Manager Training and Consulting FKE. The modules included:

1.  Module 1 - Key Changes in Labor Laws

2.  Module 2- Data Protection Act and Employer's Obligations

3.  Module 3 - Emerging Issues in Industrial Relations and Court Rulings

“The information and knowledge you have gained puts you in a better position to prepare and appropriately anticipate how to handle emerging issues in Labour Laws and Employee Relations,” Ms. Mugo said in her closing remarks.

The Physical workshop will take place on 4th - 5th August 2022 in Nakuru. Delegates will explore Case Studies, participate in Role Plays and will be provided with takeaway practical Tool Kits which they will immediately use at their workplaces.  Do not miss out on this, see the below poster to register.
