Child labour remains a global problem that affects millions of children around the world. According to the International Labour Organization (ILO), an estimated 152 million children worldwide are in child labour, of which 73 million are engaged in hazardous work. Child labour is any work that is harmful to a child's physical, mental, or emotional health, or that deprives them of their right to education and development.
The Federation of Kenya Employers is keen on working towards ending child labour particularly in Africa and currently collaborating with the International Labour Organization (ILO) in the ACCEL Africa project -Accelerating action for the elimination of child labour in supply chains in Africa. This project seeks to:
➡️Strengthen Policies; Legal and institutional frameworks
➡️Institutionalize innovative and evidence-base solutions
➡️Scale strategies through knowledge sharing, partnership and financing.
On November 2nd 2023, Ms. Hellen Rintari, National Project Coordinator, International Labour Organization, held a meeting with the FKE team. Below are some of the areas discussed during the meeting towards the success of the program:
- Development and delivery of training on child labour monitoring and remediation to government officials, business representatives, and civil society workers.
- Support of the development of national child labour monitoring systems in several African countries
- Working with businesses to develop and implement child labour policies and procedures
- Raising awareness of child labour and promoting responsible business practices through campaigns and workshops
- Supporting the development of alternative livelihoods for children and their families.
Together, we can end child labour!
