Agriculture is the backbone of Kenya's economy employing over 80 percent of the population. In fact, more than 50 percent of export earnings are attributed to agricultural products with cash crops of coffee, tea, tobacco, cotton, sisal, pyrethrum, and cashew nuts leading the way.

The Federation of Kenya Employers (FKE) is the premier employer’s organization in Kenya, established in 1959 under the Trade Unions Act Cap 233, to represent the collective interest of employers in Kenya. The Federation’s membership includes employers in the private and public sectors – including state cooperation’s, the local authorities and employers associations. FKE provides a forum for employers in promoting sound industrial relations and observance of fair labour practices. The Federation also advocates, endorses, and defends the interests of employers. In addition, the Federation supports good management practices and develops sustainable institutional capacity and competence among its members.

The Federation is organised as follows:
  • The Management Board

The board is elected by members of the Federation at the Annual General Meeting, and is representative of all sections of the membership.

Board which consists of the Chairman, two Deputy Chairmen, three Vice-Chairmen, the Immediate Past Chairman and not more than twenty four members elected annually by members in addition to co-opted members .

The Board is responsible for the formulation and control of the overall policy of the Federation.

  • The Executive Committee.

The Management Board is aided by an Executive Committee in the general administration of the Federation

Other Committees include the Rural Employers' Standing Committee, a Standing Advisory Committee and various Branch Committees, all of which have distinct roles and functions

The committee is responsible for ensuring effective implementation of the policies and decisions of the Management Board.

  • The Management Board Economic Sub-Committee.

This is a Sub-Committee of the Board created in 1994 to consider in detail developments in the economic sphere and to prepare points for submission to and for discussion with the Government and /or other bodies.

  • The Rural Employer

The Committee provides a valuable forum for the agricultural and plantation employers to discuss matters or developments as they may affect agricultural sector.

  • Standing Advisory Committee

The committee which is composed of specialists in the areas of Industrial relations and human resource development considers developments in these areas and submit its recommendations to the Management Board for action.
